CALL FOR SYMPOSIA

NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSION FOR SYMPOSIA FOR S4SN 2012

The Program Committee is pleased to announce the S4SN 2012 call for symposia. If you have an idea for an exciting topic that is pertinent to social neuroscience, please submit your symposium proposal by March 1st, 2012 to programcommittee@s4sn.org. Symposia will be selected based on the overall program needs, with an emphasis on the following criteria:

Symposium Criteria

The organizer of the proposed symposium must be a member of S4SN.
Each symposium will consist of four speakers who provide complementary perspectives on a timely scientific topic that is relevant to social neuroscience.
The symposium must have balanced representation of human and animal research.
The time allotted for each symposium is 90 minutes.
At the time of your proposal submission, speakers should be willing to participate in the symposium if selected.
Speakers should understand that no honorarium or complimentary registration is given for participation.
The Program Committee reserves the right to ask an organizer to modify their symposium to ensure balance and quality in the annual meeting program.

Content of the Symposium proposal

The proposal should be less than 2 pages of single-spaced text
The proposal must contain:
A brief summary of the goals of the symposium and a discussion of why the topic is timely and of general interest to the S4SN membership
Talk titles, speakers, speaker affiliation and contact information
A statement indicating that the proposed speakers have agreed to participate if selected
A brief summary of each talk.
The symposium and talk titles should clearly define the work discussed.

Deadline for symposium submissions: March 1st, 2012.

To submit your symposium proposal, please email: programcommittee@s4sn.org

CALL FOR PRE-MEETING WORKSHOPS

NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSION FOR PRE-MEETING WORKSHOPS FOR S4SN 2012

The Program Committee is pleased to launch also the S4N 2012 call for pre-meeting workshops, and welcomes various topics that are relevant to social neuroscience and could be useful to students in the field.

The workshop is a three-hour event on a single topic, and takes place prior to the Opening Ceremony of the meeting on October 11, 2012. Integrative topics are especially encouraged. The format is flexible. This is a great opportunity to introduce trainees to a method of analysis or a technique, and to bring together researchers from both the animal and human research. Proposals should include a title, objectives of the workshop and a description of its importance to the S4SN membership.

To submit your pre-meeting workshop proposal, please email: programcommittee@s4sn.org

Deadline for pre-meeting workshop submissions: March 1st, 2012.

GET READY FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION FOR S4SN 2012

Want to share your scientific results at S4SN 2012 by submitting a poster abstract in the field of social (human and/or non-human animals) behavior and its neural underpinnings?

Abstract submission opens April 19th and closes May 10th, 2012.

Note: S4SN 2012 is a satellite meeting of SFN (SFN.org/am2012). That said, you do NOT need to attend the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) annual meeting, or be a member of SfN, to attend the Annual Meeting of the Society for Social Neuroscience (S4SN.org). If you are planning on attending SfN, however, please note that SfN regulations allow individuals to present their SfN abstracts during satellite events.

Registration fees for the S4SN 2012 meeting in New Orleans will be significantly reduced for Society members who have paid their 2011-12 membership dues. Go to www.s4sn.org <http://www.s4sn.org> to activate or renew your membership.
Course details:

A laboratory experience at the Friday Harbor Labs studying how neurons produce adaptive behavior.

This 5-week graduate* course will focus on learning techniques in neuroethological research such as behavioral recording and analysis, electrophysiology of intact and reduced preparations, and pharmacology, immunohistochemistry, and confocal microscopy of neural structures. Each pair of students will explore a project that helps them to learn the techniques they need in their own research. The course research will focus on the nudibranch sea slug Tritonia diomedea because of its amenability to neuroethological analysis and benefits as a teaching model. Lectures will focus primarily on background necessary to understand fundamental techniques in neurophysiology as well as behavioural analysis.
*advanced undergraduates can also apply

Dates: June 18 - July 20, 2012 (5 weeks; 9 credits)
Hello all,

The Ecological & Evolutionary Ethology of Fishes (EEEF) 2012 website has been launched. This conferences focuses on natural behaviours of fish and is an excellent venue for basic and applied fish behavioural topics and the neural basis underpinning the behaviours. There is a special session on sensory ecology of fish that may be of particular interest to neuroethologists on this listserve. The conference will be held at the University of Windsor, June 17-21, 2012. Watch for updates to the website over the next several weeks.

Please check out the program for keynote speakers and plenary themes on the websitie: http://www.uwindsor.ca/eeef

Greetings All.

Registration for the 2012 East Coast Nerve Net meeting (March 23th to 25th) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Hotel and Conference Center is now open. Please see our website for conference details and registration information. We have labored this year, as before, to make the conference affordable and friendly for junior investigators, post-docs, and students (established faculty, too, of course!). This year's venue (UMass, as stated above) will reduce costs considerably over years past. We hope you'll consider attending and bringing your students!

We're very excited to announce that our keynote address in 2012 will be delivered by Dr. Roger Hanlon (MBL). Both Dr. Hanlon's seminar and the Sunday Symposium talks will address advances in cephalopod biology.

http://mars.wne.edu/ecnn

Thank you for sharing this announcement with anyone you believe might be interested. Your continued support drives every year's exciting meeting!
Dear Colleagues,

We are looking for undergraduate, postgraduate or graduate students to serve as course assistants in the Neural Systems & Behavior (NS&B) course this summer at Woods Hole. This is an exceptional opportunity for up-and-coming students who might be interested in pursuing a career in science. Note that these are not Teaching Assistant positions. Please relay the following message to anyone who might be appropriate.

Many thanks,

Paul Katz and Jim Knierim
NS&B Course Directors

POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
Course Assistants for summer 2012
Neural Systems and Behavior (NS&B) course
at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), Woods Hole, MA

Up to three Course Assistants (CAs) are needed for the Neural Systems and Behavior (NS&B) course (http://www.mbl.edu/education/courses/summer/course_neural_sys.html). NS&B is an intensive, 8-week laboratory/lecture summer course for pre- and postdoctoral students. The CAs work under the supervision of the two Course Directors. Training is provided by MBL before the course begins. The CAs must be in residence between about May 30 and Aug 1, 2012. Hours are flexible but include late nights and weekends. Applicants should have at least 2 years of undergraduate training in biology or a related field. The positions require initiative, flexibility, organizational skills, basic familiarity with laboratory techniques, and the ability to work well with other people in an intensive
environment. Compensation includes weekly minimum salary of $441, room & board, and round-trip travel to Woods Hole.
